Frequent faults, uneven temperature, deteriorated lining, unreliable controls and rising energy consumption may require a systematic overhaul. Replacing a damaged part alone does not necessarily address the cause. Choosing a supplier means checking its ability to diagnose, implement and verify work on the complete heat treatment furnace.
Suneng box-furnace documents separate empty-furnace commissioning, loaded heat-up commissioning and acceptance against the technical agreement. Ask an overhaul supplier which level its work affects and what records it will provide. If the answer is only that the equipment starts normally, ask how the agreed load and actual process will be verified. Equipment-function checks, measurement reports and product inspections serve different purposes.
1. Look for understanding of the whole furnace
The assessment should cover the furnace structure; refractory and insulation; electric heating or combustion; doors, trolley, rollers, mesh belt or pusher; circulation fans; electrical controls; alarms and operating records. For example, uneven temperature may involve heating-zone layout, lining damage, circulation, sensors, seals or loading. A supplier should explain how these systems interact.
2. Require a site assessment before a firm proposal
Inspect distortion, corrosion and cracks in the structure, the lining, doors and seals, heating components, electrical condition and recurring faults. Review process requirements, energy records and the available shutdown window. The proposal should identify what will be retained, repaired, replaced or upgraded, what it is expected to achieve, its limitations and the acceptance criteria. A quotation based only on a few photographs leaves substantial uncertainty.
3. Compare overhaul, retrofit and replacement
An overhaul aims to restore reliability; a retrofit changes systems to meet a defined objective; replacement introduces new equipment. The choice depends on the remaining structure, process suitability, foundations, rails, mechanisms, controls, total cost, interruption to production and future needs. A supplier should help compare these options rather than assume every old furnace should be overhauled.
4. Define acceptance before work starts
Plan no-load and representative loaded trials. Depending on the scope, check temperature-control stability, temperature uniformity, sealing, mechanical operation, alarms and interlocks, recorded curves, operator training and handover documents. Agree the effective working zone, measurement conditions and criteria. Compare energy performance under equivalent workpiece, process, load and operating conditions; a successful start-up is not the whole acceptance procedure.
5. Assess controls and records together
Review the programmable controller, operator interface, temperature zones, sensors, alarm functions and records. Specify what can be stored or exported and which production or management interfaces are required. Replacing the screen or controller does not by itself create complete process traceability: the program, instruments, records and operating procedures must support the intended use.
6. Check experience with other brands and demanding sectors
Imported or unfamiliar equipment may require drawing recovery, field measurement, program review and identification of available replacement parts. Capability should be established for the actual equipment rather than promised for every brand.
For sector-specific or customer requirements, distinguish the document and assessment object. AMS2750 covers pyrometry for metallic-material thermal-processing equipment. Nadcap is an accreditation program for critical processes, including heat treatment. CQI-9 assesses automotive heat-treatment systems. They are not interchangeable supplier qualifications. Check equipment requirements, the process operator, testing party and exact assessment scope against this project; serving a sector does not itself establish accreditation.
7. Eight questions to ask a candidate supplier
- Will it investigate the site and explain the causes of the problems?
- Will it compare overhaul with new equipment where appropriate?
- Can it assess structure, heating, mechanisms and controls together?
- Will it list what is retained, repaired and replaced?
- Are the acceptance conditions written down?
- What control functions and operating records will be delivered?
- What relevant furnace and process experience can it demonstrate?
- How will spare parts and subsequent service be provided?

9. Common questions
What information should be supplied first?
Provide the furnace type, dimensions, operating temperature, workpieces and load, faults, drawings or photographs, energy and maintenance records, process requirements and available shutdown window.
Is an overhaul always cheaper than replacement?
No. Compare the complete scope, remaining condition, process limitations, interruption, operating costs and future maintenance. Extensive work on an unsuitable structure may not be economical.
Can only the controls be upgraded?
That may be feasible if the underlying heating, mechanics and measurement systems remain suitable. Confirm interfaces and acceptance requirements before defining a controls-only scope.
How should a local supplier be selected?
Location can help with surveys and service, but compare diagnosis, relevant experience, scope, acceptance and support rather than distance alone.
